The key duties of the position include:

The Role

Under limited guidance, duties of the Discipline Leader - Airborne Radar Systems will include:

  • Leading and shaping the future direction of RF phased array systems, including receivers and wide-band active electronic scanned array (AESA) capabilities for the war-fighter.
  • Developing, leading and nurturing science teams to cultivate a highly productive and effective workplace culture and achieve academic and operational outcomes.
  • Apply scientific knowledge and subject matter expertise in ways that are often original, creative and innovative in developing and implementing solutions for problems that arise in challenging Defence environments.
  • Excellent communication skills with a track record of engaging and strategically influencing a large range of partners and stakeholders at all levels across Defence, industry, academia and other research agencies.
  • An appreciation of the Science & Technology strategic priorities and be able to communicate these to others. The ability to decompose a complex ambition into achievable steps, and to deliver practical outcomes for Defence clients in a timely manner, with demonstrated ability to focus on and resolve key technical challenges.

About our Team

Sensors and Effectors leads the impetus for innovation within Australian force operations by providing science and technology advice about equipment, personnel and processes. The RF Sensing and Electromagnetic Warfare (RFSEW) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within DST Group’s Sensors and Effectors Division (SED) drives the application of science and technology to solve problems and deliver solutions for the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and improve their capabilities in radar surveillance.

One of the key roles of the Resilient Radar Systems team is to develop and demonstrate resilient radar technologies and systems, including Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, passive radar, multi-static and multi-function RF capabilities.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a seasoned team leader with the ability to understand the broad strategic context, have excellent stakeholder engagement skills together with strong scientific research, engineering or technical experience in radar systems. They should possess a proven track record of leading multi-disciplinary teams in delivering high-impact solutions to defence-related problems through a combination of experimentation and modelling.

The candidate should have excellent communication and relationship-building skills to effectively liaise with key stakeholders, including Defence clients, industry partners, and international collaborators. They should also have experience in supervising and mentoring staff, and be able to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the team. A strong focus on safety and quality research practices is essential, along with the ability to manage resources effectively.

Eligibility

Security Clearance:

Prior to commencement, successful applicants will be required to undergo a psychological assessment and an extensive security clearance process. As a Positive Vetting clearance is required, applicants must be Australian Citizens; be able to account for their personal background for their whole life; and be able to demonstrate suitability to work in a high security intelligence environment.

Mandatory Qualifications:

The S&T6/EL2 Discipline Leader - Sensor Systems position requires:

  • academic qualifications in one or more of the following related fields of research; or
  • relevant skills and work experience.
